Tour a Recycling Sorting Center!

Tour a Recycling Sorting Center!

Material Recovery Facility (MRF)

Have you ever wondered what happens to the recyclable materials once Raleigh Recycling crews collect them from your recycling bin? They are all mixed together in the recycling truck. Where do they go? Who’s going to deal with that mess of materials? What if unacceptable materials got put in?

Get your questions answered! Raleigh Recycling is now offering quarterly tours of our recycling contractor’s processing facility. The place where all the materials are taken is called a material recovery facility, usually abbreviated MRF, and pronounced “merf”. This is the place where all the materials are sorted out – both by people and by equipment. Once sorted, each material gets baled up and is shipped off to a manufacturer to be made into new products.
