CAC Update – 27 March 2009

Friday, March 27th, 2009

Hi neighbors! Today’s updates:

1. As of right now, the Service Raleigh volunteer clean-up is still on
for tomorrow despite Saturday’s forecast for rain and possible
thunderstorms. Be sure to check http://www.serviceraleigh.org for the
latest news before you head out.

2. Raleigh police are looking for Michael Wayne Hutchinson Jr., a 5’11”
170 pound white male accused of shooting into an occupied apartment on
Lightner Lane, striking an 11-year-old. Hutchinson has the letters YMG
tattooed on his neck. See this link for his mug shot and more info:
http://wake.mync.com/site/Wake/news/story/30680/shooting-suspect-at-large/

3. Brenda Pulley was happy to get back to work on Monday. She has most
all the furniture and clothes she needs, though she is still seeking a
washing machine and two small tables for her kitchen, if possible. See
http://www.eastraleigh.org for the latest updates. Thanks to everyone
for their donations!

4. Committees will soon be formed to coordinate some of the CAC tasks.
Committees will be formed to handle zoning and economic development,
among others. If you’re interested in helping, contact me for more details.

Everyone have a safe (and dry) weekend!

Brenda Pulley update #3

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Saturday morning I took the last of the donations over to Brenda Pulley, recruiting my neighbor Marcus to assist. Her apartment looked much different from when I’d seen it before. Her son has provided her with living room furniture and another bed. Marcus and I put her bed together and moved in a dresser, chest of drawers, and recliner that Marcus donated. Brenda was most appreciative and seems to be getting settled nicely.

Brenda doesn’t seem to need much more at this point. She did say that a small table for the kitchen might be nice (2′ -3′ tall by 3′ long by 2′ deep would be ideal) so she would have a place to put her coffee pot and other kitchen supplies. She might use another, similar-sized table in the kitchen, too.

Brenda has used her donations wisely: she’s already paid her rent through May. She sounded quite happy to be returning to work again tomorrow after being off a month. Most of all, she was very appreciative of all that’s been done for her.

When I started collecting things for Brenda, I just wanted to help get her life back to normal as quickly as possible. While there is no replacing her lost husband, I feel like our efforts have gone a long way towards picking her back up. Thanks for all your help!

Brenda Pulley update #2

Friday, March 20th, 2009

As you may know, before Monday’s CAC meeting I delivered a van full of donations to Brenda Pulley. I’m pleased to say she had things for her place the moment she walked in.

Things she has: clothes/shoes, queen mattress/box springs, another bed (unknown size), kitchen table w/chairs, rocking chair, office chair, 19″ TV, microwave, coffee pot, dish rack, two cooking pots, dishes, some cleaning supplies, glasses, towels, sheets, and vacuum.

Things she’s been pledged: bed frame, dresser, chest of drawers, lamps, and night stand.

Things she could still use: welcome mats (2 inside, 2 outside), broom/dustpan, curtains, clock radio, oven mitts, salt and pepper shakers, frying pan, TV stand, and money. Maybe more clothes or coats, too.

I’ll be delivering more donations Saturday (and Sunday, if needed), so there’s still time to donate. If you’d like to offer anything contact me and I’ll coordinate getting it to Brenda. Thanks!

Mystery spot

Anyone know what this is? It’s a spot between Poole Road and New Bern Avenue.

It looks like a remnant of some now-defunct factory or something.

Update on Brenda Pulley

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

I spoke with Brenda Pulley again yesterday afternoon. She will be moving in to her new apartment on Monday and still needs various items. So far I’ve gotten clothes, shoes, vacuum, a rocking chair, an office chair, some dishes, and cash donations.

I also have pledges for these:
More clothes
Queen size mattress & box spring (no frame)
Microwave
Older 19″ tv
Kitchen table with chairs
Rattan 2 seat couch
Crock pot
Stove pot
Upholstered chair
Towels

I will be visiting her on Monday to drop these off, after which I should have a better idea of what she still needs. Thanks for all of your generosity!

Donations needed for Brenda Pulley

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

As you may have heard, a neighbor of ours on Millbank Street died in a
house fire February 21st. Elvis Pulley died tragically when the kerosene
heater he was refueling exploded.

Now his widow, Brenda Pulley, has literally nothing left. Not only has
she lost her husband, she has no furniture, clothes, or household items
of any sort. She does not even have a roof over her head, as their home
was destroyed by the fire.

If you have any items you wish to donate, whether it be furniture,
clothing, appliances – whatever, contact me and I will see that it gets
to her. If items need to be picked up, that can be arranged, too. You
can also bring items to our March 16th CAC meeting if that is more
convenient for you.

Please, let’s all do what we can to help Brenda put her life back together.

Mark Turner

P.S. I’m told Brenda wears a size six clothes and size 6 1/2 shoes.

New East CAC mailing lists

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

As mentioned in last night’s meeting, I’ve set up new mailing lists for the East CAC. Yahoo Groups requires subscribers to sign up for Yahoo, which can be an impediment to joining. The new list uses the common GNU Mailman software for managing lists.

IMPORTANT: If you were signed up for the Yahoo list you need not make any changes. Your list membership has been automagically transferred to these new lists. The Yahoo list will soon be decommissioned and will no longer accept new members.

After thinking more about it today, I decided to sign up everyone for both lists. You’d be losing discussion ability if I didn’t, and I didn’t want you to miss anything. If for some reason you need to cut back on incoming email, you can switch to digest format (or unsubscribe, heaven forbid!) using the links below.

Please let your neighbors know about this list and encourage them to sign up themselves.

Longview (Poe) House rezoning meeting January 13th

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

The Raleigh Planning Commission will consider the rezoning request Z-50-08 of the Longview (Poe) House at their meeting Tuesday, January 13th at 9 AM in the Raleigh City Council Chambers.

The law firm handling the rezoning, K&L Gates, has sent the CAC a list of conditions to be applied to the property and have stated that it is their understanding that these conditions satisfy the neighbors along Luther Road.

Minutes from 28 January 2004 Planning Commission meeting

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

AGENDA ITEM 3(A)3: SP-101-03 – St. Augustine’s Track and Football Stadium
This site is bounded by Oakwood Avenue, North State Street, Glascock Street, Hill Street and Milburnie Road. The site plan proposes the stadium and track to be located on the northern portion of the site adjacent to North State Street and Glascock Street. The site is within the City Limits.
This request is to approve a proposed track and football stadium with a 5,000 seat bleacher structure and associated on-site parking with 1,000 spaces. The site is 94.2 acres zoned Office & Institutional-1 (southern half of site) and O&I-1 Conditional Use (northern half of site). This plan requires preliminary site plan approval in accordance with 10-2132.2(c)(1)I. as this plan proposes vehicular surface parking areas that are within 400’ of residential uses. There is a pending Special Use Permit for the Stadium in accordance with 10-2145.
Mr. Thompson was excused from this case.
6
Planner Darges presented the case. She noted that numerous telephone calls were received from adjacent property owners who are opposed to the project.
Bezelle Washington, representing the applicant, was available for questions.
Representatives of the college explained how the proposed stadium will enhance the college and community, bring the college community together, and help develop student athletes (physically and mentally).
Surrounding neighbors indicated that they are opposed to the project as presented because the proposed stadium will generate traffic, increase vehicular traffic and cause parking problems for the community. The neighbors are also concerned about the lack of communication between the college and the community on the proposed project. The neighbors presented the commission with a booklet outlining the concerns of the community and a petition signed by neighbors (Capital Heights and Madonna Acres) who are opposed to the project.
There was discussion regarding: the proposed stormwater management facility, how the stormwater management facility will function, how the stormwater management facility will be protected, lighting, if a Neighborhood Overlay Conservation District has been established for the proposed area, if pedestrian connections will be provided on the proposed vehicular path on Milburnie Drive, if the stadium will be restricted to only football and track events, how the traffic flow was evaluated, who would be responsible for stripping the streets, the difference between the site plan and special use permit procedure, and where would school buses enters and park at the proposed stadium.
Mr. Cutler moved to refer the case to the Committee of the Whole as further discussion take place between the college and the neighbors. Mr. Trotter seconded the motion, but a vote was not taken.
Mr. Trotter made a substitute motion to refer the case to the February 3, 2004 Committee of the Whole meeting for further review. Mr. Cutler seconded the motion. The vote was not unanimous, 9-1, with Dr. Mallette voting in the negative.
