Submitted by Secretary Sue Sturgis

Raleigh’s East Citizens Advisory Council held its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 21 at the Lions Park Community Center. About 35 people attended, with several there for the first time. Attendees approved the February minutes without changes. Chairman Mark Turner recorded the meeting, with video available at www.eastraleigh.org. Attendees were invited for beers at Big Boss Brewery after the meeting.

SUCCESS REPORTS: Spring is here, and the new playground at Lions Park is drawing crowds. The Belvidere Park signs went up near the car wash on Dennis Avenue, and they look beautiful. And a song that ECAC Vice Chair Van Alson wrote with alt-country rock singer-songwriter Ryan Adams was on “American Idol”; there’s a link on the ECAC’s Facebook page.

East CAC Feb 2011 Minutes

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Submitted by Secretary Sue Sturgis

Raleigh’s East Citizens Advisory Council held its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21, 2011 at the Lions Park Community Center. About 30 people attended, with about five there for the first time. The January minutes were approved without changes. Chairman Mark Turner recorded the meeting, with video available at www.eastraleigh.org.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Charlene Willard with the city’s Community Services Department announced that the Belvidere Park neighborhood will be dedicating its new stone entryway on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. and placing a time capsule inside. The project was funded with a Raleigh Neighborhood Improvement Matching Grant. Other neighborhoods interested in seeking a grant should move forward now; applications are due June 30, and the ongoing recession means the program’s future is uncertain. Anyone interested is encouraged to call Charlene at charlene.willard@raleighnc.gov or 919-996-5718 to discuss ideas.

The Raleigh Summer Youth Employment Program offered by Community Services will be interviewing applicants soon. It is for people ages 14 to 18. For more information, visit http://1.usa.gov/eeXNfG.

Charlene discussed an idea for an ECAC calendar. Currently no CAC has one, and there are lots of possibilities. Anyone interested in working on this should contact Charlene.

Good morning, Eastsiders!

Our next East CAC meeting will be held on Monday, 21 February 2011 at 7 PM at the Lions Park Community Center, 516 Dennis Avenue.

Monday’s meeting will focus on the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). Staff from Raleigh’s Planning Department will be present to discuss the UDO and to conduct an exercise with us to solicit feedback as to how the UDO should be applied to the East CAC area. Raleigh Police offer holiday tips

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

The Raleigh Police department offers these useful tips on their blog.

The following are some helpful tips to remember before leaving your home (whether you are going across town or across the country) for the holidays:

  • Don’t display gifts beneath the Christmas tree, which can be seen from windows or doors.
  • Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave your house or apartment, even for a few minutes.
  • A holiday problem can occur when exterior Christmas light extension cords are run inside through a window and prevent it from being secured.
  • Don’t advertise that you are away from home. Don’t leave outdoor lights burning 24 hours a day, piled up newspapers, mail, or advertising fliers hanging on the door knob. Instead, use a light timer and ask a neighbor to pick up your newspapers and mail.
  • Don’t hide spare keys under rocks, in flowerpots, or above door ledges. Instead give the spare key to a trusted neighbor.
  • After the holidays, don’t advertise gifts received by the boxes left for the garbage collection. Destroy or flatten for closure in a recycle bin.
  • Z-24-10 at Planning Commission Tuesday at 9 AM

    Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Z-24-10, the convenience store at Poole Road and Norwood, will be heard at the Planning Commission’s meeting on Tuesday, December 14th, at 9 AM in the City Council Chambers. Read the staff evaluation, latest conditions, conditions correspondence, and a follow-up memo for more details.

Also on the agenda is SP-32-10, the proposed New Bern Crossing Hotel across from WakeMed at New Bern Avenue and Milburnie Rd.
